Writing papers with impact – a half-day workshop

Content: Learn how to tell a story with your science by focusing on the problem that your research solves. Find out how to write gripping introductions and clear and logical results & discussions. Finally, see how to create a punchy and persuasive abstract.
Format: The workshop is a stimulating mix of interactive presentations, individual exercises, and small-group sessions. The exercises include analyzing sections of published papers, short writing and editing tasks, and giving each other feedback on abstracts.


Preparation: On registering for the workshop, participants will be asked to carry out two tasks: 1) select two published papers from the literature to analyze during the workshop, and 2) submit a <150 word abstract to edit during the workshop (details will be provided on registering). About the trainer: Dr. Alison Green received her PhD in chemistry from the University of Melbourne. She then moved into scientific publishing. Advanced Materials (Wiley) was where she honed her skills. Alison was later appointed to Editor-in-Chief of the Australian Journal of Chemistry. Soon after, she started the journal Environmental Chemistry. She now runs workshops on scientific writing and publishing. Long-term clients include Nature Research Academies and the Technical University of Graz.
