WORKSHOPS

Make Science beautiful again

Graphic design for scientists

Learn the basic about colour theory and colour systems as well as when to use the correct image format (e.g., vector and pixel format). Also, a short session about typography gives you an insight on how types can be used as part of your design. Learn how to present your data in a barrier-free way or how to use alternative tools for the representation of complex datasets. Make the most of your graphs in publications, conference posters and talks to deliver the message to your audience in the best way possible.

Workshop Leader: Verena Resch, Luminous Lab

Verena Resch studied chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Graz. During her high school years, she interned at a large advertising agency. The skills she learned there were put to good use in her PhD and Postdoc time, when she designed multiple journal covers, posters and presentations. Scientific Design combines both of her skills perfectly.

Origin

Pictures say more than 1,000 values

… publications made by software OriginPro can also have this motto. With the help of graphics, diagrams, curves and images, the human eye can see amounts, distributions, trends and relationships at a glance. OriginPro software is known as a tool for data analysis and graphical presentation. Most students know OriginPro as a powerful and user-friendly software with maximum flexibility to realize their own ideas.

In addition to the many built-in templates, you will learn in this workshop how to create your own template and how to share it with colleagues. Additionally, the participants can learn how to create user-defined styles – called themes – and how to apply them to other graphics.

Creating a Master page can also simplify your work with OriginPro and will help you to make your publications uniform by sharing common elements. Bring all your questions regarding OriginPro to the workshop, there is enough time for tips and tricks!

Workshop Leader: Markus Höhnen, ADDITIVE Soft- und Hardware für Technik und Wissenschaft GmbH

As distributor for the manufacturer OriginLab, company ADDITIVE is responsible for the OriginPro users in German-speaking Europe (D-A-CH) in sales, training and support matters.
Markus Höhnen is your contact person in Austria. He is in touch with OriginLab people and working with the software for around 30 years – and he is happy to share his knowledge and experience with you!

Reaxys

Chemists in every field search for chemistry literature and bioactivity data, so why not learning how to query and filter for chemical substances and reactions with our database? You will be empowered to more consciously design your reaction, study your target compounds, learning what other scientists are doing in the same field and how you can contribute to the advancement of science. Designed by chemists, Reaxys is more than chemistry database, it’s a cheminformatics solution that delivers chemistry facts the way chemists need them.

Workshop Leader: Marta Da Pian, ELSEVIER

Marta earned her PhD at University Ca’ Foscari of Venice on supramolecular organic chemistry for which she was awarded with the Reaxys – Italian Chemical Society Young Researcher Award. Her research career continued in the pharmaceutical and forensic chemistry fields at the University of Padua. She is active in several scientific societies and outreach organization such as SCI, IYCN, Pint of Science and the Global Women’s Breakfast.
